Personal Fruit

 Luke 6:44a says, “For each tree is known by its own fruit.”  

Have you ever claimed Jesus just because your family goes to church?  Because your mom loves Jesus?  Because you were born into a “Christian” family?  Because you went to “Christian” school?  Jesus squashes all these claims in Luke 6 when He tells us that we are known by our “own fruit.”  We must know Jesus and be obedient and submissive to Him ourselves.  We can’t rely on the “trees” around us to bear our “fruit.”  Fruit is personal.  Ephesians 2:10 assures us that God has prepared “fruit” for us to bear.  He has a mission just for us and we need to be on our own personal mission, obeying Jesus every step of the way.  To be saved?  No.  Because we love Him and He is truly our Lord.

Wow!  It has been a very long time since I have posted on this blog.  Does anyone even look at it anymore? Well, the last few years have been very crazy for us.  I have suffered from intense depression and just feel like I am walking out of it.  Over the last year, God has called us to some major changes in our lives.  In August of 2013, we relocated to Rapid City, SD.  We love it here, but it took some time to get used to.  In December of 2013, we realized that He wanted us to put our oldest child in school.  We found a great Christian school and he is doing great!  Then, in the spring of 2014, we realized He was calling an end to our homeschooling years.  We weren't really sure how we were going to do it, but we knew He wanted our kids in a great Christian school near us, so we signed them up.  By the middle of the summer, with a few bumps along the way, I had taken a part time teaching job at my oldest son's school teaching my ...

Suffering

     We are doing a study called Job: A Story of Unlikely Joy  by Lisa Harper (Lifeway Press 2018) in our Bible study at church.  Job is a book about suffering.  It tells us that the "health and wealth" gospel has been around for a long time and was just as much a lie then as it is now.  This week, we have been looking at "wound care" using Elihu's discourses from chapters 32-37.      I have been struggling with one main thing this week - what is suffering?  Job suffered the loss of his children, his wealth, and his health, not even to mention the loss of respect and friendship that seems to go along with those.  His were huge, obvious sufferings.  Lisa Harper mentions some huge, obvious traumas in her life as she discusses these sufferings.  But what if we haven't had the huge, obvious sufferings?  Personally, I think I have lived a pretty charmed life.  I was never abused in any way.  My parents love...

Letting Go

     Sometimes, letting go is so hard.  As my children get older, they have to choose their own paths.  I don't always agree with their choices.  Some of their choices actually scare me.  But I can't make those choices for them and, as much as I hate it, they are just as human as I am.  I think of all the mistakes, some of them life altering, I made in my teens and twenties.  Yet, I am still here, loving Jesus with everything in me.  Even when I have slipped over and over, I don't fall.  "Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; Yes, our God is compassionate." (Psalm 116:5)  So I pray for my children and love them no matter what.  I pray that they will love Jesus more than anything and they will be able to get back on the right path when they stray.  I have to release them to the One who loves them even more than I do, and, as they get older, I have to release them more and more often.      Something to ad...
