Truth

 "Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?"  Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."  Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?""  John 18:37-38a

"What is truth?"  We think this is a question only of our relativistic time, but Pilate asked that question 2000 years ago.  People have been asking that question since there were people.  In Psalm 119, we are told "Your law is truth" (verse 140), "Your commandments are truth" (verse 151), and "The sum of Your word is truth" (verse 160).  This tells us that God's Word is truth.  John tells us that "the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)  If God's Word is truth and His Word became flesh in Jesus, then Jesus is truth.  He confirms this in John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.""  So the bottom line answer to the question "What is truth?" is "Jesus is truth."  That is hard for us to grasp in our finite human minds.  But He is truth.  God's Word, in written form or in the form of Jesus, is truth.  And everything should be weighed against truth.  No matter how much we want something to be or not be, if it doesn't line up with God's Word, if it doesn't line up with Jesus, then it isn't truth.  We need to know truth.  We need to know Jesus.  That is why salvation is about the relationship, not the religion.

"So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."" (John 8:31-32).

Wow!  It has been a very long time since I have posted on this blog.  Does anyone even look at it anymore? Well, the last few years have been very crazy for us.  I have suffered from intense depression and just feel like I am walking out of it.  Over the last year, God has called us to some major changes in our lives.  In August of 2013, we relocated to Rapid City, SD.  We love it here, but it took some time to get used to.  In December of 2013, we realized that He wanted us to put our oldest child in school.  We found a great Christian school and he is doing great!  Then, in the spring of 2014, we realized He was calling an end to our homeschooling years.  We weren't really sure how we were going to do it, but we knew He wanted our kids in a great Christian school near us, so we signed them up.  By the middle of the summer, with a few bumps along the way, I had taken a part time teaching job at my oldest son's school teaching my ...

Suffering

     We are doing a study called Job: A Story of Unlikely Joy  by Lisa Harper (Lifeway Press 2018) in our Bible study at church.  Job is a book about suffering.  It tells us that the "health and wealth" gospel has been around for a long time and was just as much a lie then as it is now.  This week, we have been looking at "wound care" using Elihu's discourses from chapters 32-37.      I have been struggling with one main thing this week - what is suffering?  Job suffered the loss of his children, his wealth, and his health, not even to mention the loss of respect and friendship that seems to go along with those.  His were huge, obvious sufferings.  Lisa Harper mentions some huge, obvious traumas in her life as she discusses these sufferings.  But what if we haven't had the huge, obvious sufferings?  Personally, I think I have lived a pretty charmed life.  I was never abused in any way.  My parents love...

Letting Go

     Sometimes, letting go is so hard.  As my children get older, they have to choose their own paths.  I don't always agree with their choices.  Some of their choices actually scare me.  But I can't make those choices for them and, as much as I hate it, they are just as human as I am.  I think of all the mistakes, some of them life altering, I made in my teens and twenties.  Yet, I am still here, loving Jesus with everything in me.  Even when I have slipped over and over, I don't fall.  "Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; Yes, our God is compassionate." (Psalm 116:5)  So I pray for my children and love them no matter what.  I pray that they will love Jesus more than anything and they will be able to get back on the right path when they stray.  I have to release them to the One who loves them even more than I do, and, as they get older, I have to release them more and more often.      Something to ad...
