Jehovah Jireh - My Provider

Mark 8:18-20 says, ""Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?  And do you not remember, when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?"  They said to Him, "Twelve."  "When I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?"  And they said to Him, "Seven.""

I want to share something cool that I learned from Michael Card in a class on the gospels a few years ago. Did you know that there are different words for "basket" in Greek?  The word for "basket" in the feeding of the five thousand means a small lunch basket that one would wear around the neck to carry.  So, basically a lunch box.  When Jesus feed the 5,000+, He provided exactly enough extra for the twelve disciples to eat as well.  The word for "basket" in the feeding of the four thousand means a man sized basket, like the one they lowered Paul over the wall in Acts 9:25.  When Jesus feed the 4,000+, He provided to excess, showing His abundance.

You see, Jesus always provides for us.  Sometimes, His provision is exactly perfect for what we need.  Sometimes, His provision is in amazing abundance.  But He always provides.  God is our Jehovah Jireh - our provider.

""Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.""  Matthew 6:31-34
